The ancient Japanese art of Feng Shui has been implemented for thousands of years to impart a sense of harmony, order, spirituality and visual appeal. Prior to a sale it’s easy to feel overwhelmed as you decide how best to present your property to potential buyers – and this is where Feng Shui comes in. Whilst it has traditionally been used to help to create a more harmonious living space, techniques associated with the discipline can be incredibly handy when selling property. In today’s blog we share four key principles of Feng Shui that can be easily introduced to help you to sell your home faster and with less time, effort and expense involved.
Employ minimalism with emotional intelligence
Minimalism is a key principle of Feng Shui – and for followers of the discipline less is certainly more. When shopping, ask yourself – is this item useful? Is it beautiful? How much are you likely to see it, use it, wear it? Similarly when selling a property, ask yourself – will this item add to the positive impression viewers receive, or take away from it? Buyers need to see that they can make their own mark on your home – so removing personal knick-knacks and everyday items before they come to take a look around is a savvy move. This is a great habit to cultivate – and one that you can also bring into your new home for a more harmonious, balanced and calmer living environment.
Living decorations have a huge role to play in the art of Feng Shui – and the placement of plants both inside and out can have a pleasant effect on all the senses. Investing in a little landscaping and neatening up outdoor areas (focusing on lawns and borders in particular) can provide a low-maintenance method of enhancement and significantly improves curb appeal. Another low cost decorative touch involves strategically placed plants or fresh flowers indoors – especially useful if viewings are booked in.
Positive vibes only
Feng Shui works on the principle that everything is energy – and therefore objects, items and spaces possess energy that can have a positive or negative influence on the environment around us. Notably Feng Shui practitioners work with the ‘Energy Triangle’ which symbolises the importance of cohesive and harmonious energy between three key spaces in the home – the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Buyers need to feel as though they can live well in your home – sleeping soundly and relaxing easily. Spark buyers’ imagination and think about adding or subtracting as necessary to help them to feel at home and be able to picture themselves living in and enjoying your property.
Let go and clear out
One of the easiest ways to achieve a more minimalistic environment is to indulge in a little de-cluttering and spring cleaning. Tidy up, clear out and invest in visually appealing storage solutions to safely stow away belongings during viewings. This principle also applies when getting ready to physically leave the place you’ve called home. It can be emotionally difficult to move on, especially when you’ve lived somewhere for a long time. Use this as an opportunity to obtain closure and move on emotionally as well as physically, so that you’re ready to start a new chapter in your life and leave your old home in the past.
