How to style your house for a New Year’s Eve party

18th December 2017

As 2017 comes to an end and 2018 approaches, it’s time to celebrate with our nearest and dearest. This year it’s your turn to host the end of year celebrations – but party preparations can bring plenty of pressure as you endeavour to ensure that your NYE bash is memorable for all the right reasons. In this handy blog we explain how you can style your house for a New Year’s Eve party with minimal hassle and maximum effect.

Go with a theme

A theme will help you to keep things simple during the preparation stages of your party. You can also have a little fun with a theme – asking guests to dress up to accompany it. Opt for a single idea and stick to it religiously – considering the ease of locating items that fit with the option you’ve selected. Colour themes are fantastically simple but will ensure that your home looks and feels fabulous – gold is warm and decadent, silver is classy and glamorous – and you can’t go wrong with black and white.

Keep it clean and tidy

Thoroughly de-clutter, clean and tidy a couple of weeks before the party, seeking out temporary storage solutions to get everyday items and decorative bits and bobs out of the way for the big day. Under bed boxes and clear plastic storage crates can easily be slotted out of sight to maximise floor space.

Beautiful beverages

Once you’ve decided what you’ll be serving (prosecco or champagne? Punch or cocktails?) you will need to consider how you’ll serve it. Large glass punchbowls and trays of champagne glasses beside ice buckets can be dressed up in tinsel, confetti and flowers. Large glass decanters with taps beneath are perfect for self-service – and you can also use these to infuse fruit into water for teetotallers and designated drivers.

Fabulous food

Food is going to be a focal point at your party – whether you’re keeping it in the family or have chosen to throw a big bash at home. Buffet or finger food is often favoured at New Year – which makes presentation all the more important. Consider how you can present main dishes and snacks both together and throughout your home to ensure that your guests needn’t go hungrily hunting for food. Will you put everything out together, or in stages? Arrange tables and platforms prior to the party so that plates can easily be placed once the celebrations are underway.

Fun and games

Not all parties need activities – but both large and small soirees can always benefit from fun and games. Plan group participation in advance – if you’re throwing a cosier party with selected family and friends think of something everyone can get involved with – or games that ensure guests can be divided into teams. If lots of guests are attending consider setting up ‘game zones’ with activities dotted around the house – such as pin the tail on the donkey or piñata.
