Top tips when buying a property abroad

27th March 2018

With weather conditions continuing to become increasingly unsettled and uncertain all year round here in the UK, more and more families are searching for property further afield to provide an exciting new opportunity – or relief from the constant drizzle! Johnson’s has been helping customers to relocate for over 100 years and has a dedicated project team to manage international moves. Here we share four of our top tips for those looking to escape to sunnier climes or start a new life abroad.

Gather as much information as possible

When considering moving abroad from the UK, it’s important to understand every aspect and element involved in the process from start to finish. Removals to France will be different compared with international removals to Australia or America, for example. Consider the rules and regulations surrounding purchasing property abroad, and look realistically at the type of lifestyle each location you’re considering has to offer. Don’t forget to research legal and financial aspects carefully.

Consider self-build

Self-building may appear to be more difficult at first glance – but when it comes to purchasing property abroad it’s often much more cost-effective to buy land and build your dream home from scratch. Many popular ex-pat locations are home to a range of developments providing the opportunity to purchase land and a property as part of a deal, so you won’t need to worry about organising and instructing builders and architects.

Check out the local area

Start by making a list of the things you’re looking for within a location, then start to search for areas that match up. Don’t be afraid to dive in deep and ask lots of questions – searching for people who’ve already made their move and can offer an honest perspective on the process and local area. An ex-pat property hotspot may have everything you need, but demands a higher price tag to match – therefore it’s worth speaking with a local agent with experience of international removals who can point you in the right direction. They may be able to share neighbouring areas to help you achieve the best of both worlds and balance your priorities with the price you’re willing to pay.

Locate experienced international movers to help you to relocate with less stress and hassle

To ensure a smooth and successful relocation overseas it’s important to involve professionals at every step of the way – from sourcing experienced estate agents to expert international movers to protect, safely store and transport your belongings ready for your new life abroad. Value for money and versatility is also important – as professional removal companies will offer a range of services as standard, with add-ons available to ensure that the process is as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

Everything went very well, the move was brilliant. Any comment would be I lost my snake and the guys wouldn’t help look for him as they were scared (he has been found now).
