When you’re relocating, there are so many things to consider. Boxes to be packed, possessions to be cleared out, transportation to be arranged – and people to be notified. Time is of the essence during a move – so it’s rarely possible to find space to sit down and make a comprehensive list of people and organisations you’ll need to get in touch with before you go. The good news is that here at Johnsons we’ve done the hard work for you – and collated a simple checklist to help you keep everyone in the loop.
Services and utilities
It’s important to ensure that service and utility companies are aware of your move in good time – as this ensures that you can co-ordinate switch-offs and contract terminations without costly delays or overlaps. Key providers include water, gas and electricity companies, along with telephone, cable TV and internet providers. Make sure you cancel your TV licence ready to reinstate at your new address.
Post office
The Royal Mail recommends that you apply to redirect your mail three weeks before moving day – using online or postal forms, or by popping in to your local post office. Whilst you do this it’s also a good idea to check regular delivery accounts and online stores such as Amazon, PayPal and eBay and add your new address to avoid mistakenly sending items to your old home.
Financial, government and insurance
Financial details are of a sensitive and private nature – so it’s crucial to give appropriate notice periods for financial, legal and insurance companies before you move. The same is true of government agencies including Inland Revenue and DVLA. Getting in touch two to three weeks in advance avoids the risk of your sensitive mail falling in to the wrong hands or getting lost. Remember to notify banks, building societies, credit card companies and insurance providers. Your local authority should also be contacted for council tax purposes, along with your employer, pension provider and solicitor.
Health
It’s incredibly important that you update any healthcare professionals you are currently seeing and inform them of your imminent move – including your family doctor or GP, dentist and optician. Remember that if you’re under a consultant or clinic they may need to be notified separately as your medical records may not be updated across the board.
Schools
If you have children at school you’ll likely have already made arrangements for a smooth transition – whether they are staying at their current school or moving to a new one. Confirm a couple of weeks beforehand, providing physical details of your new address.
Personal
Last but not least, make sure friends and relatives know where to find you. Social media makes it harder than ever to lose touch with loved ones – but it’s still a good idea to circulate your new address electronically. Any subscriptions such as magazines, beauty boxes and food parcels will also need to be redirected.
